Black September OrganizationA Palestinian terrorist group, Black September Organization was active in the early 1970s, and was known for a series of violent acts that targeted Israeli interests and brought international attention to the Palestinian struggle.
Formed as a splinter faction of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), Black September took its name from the “Black September” conflict of 1970, in which Jordan’s King Hussein led a brutal crackdown on Palestinian guerrillas, forcing the PLO to relocate from Jordan to Lebanon.
The group’s primary aim was to draw global attention to the Palestinian cause through high-profile acts of terrorism, with a special focus on exacting revenge against those it deemed responsible for Palestinian suffering.
The most infamous attack attributed to Black September Organization occurred at the 1972 Munich Olympics. On September 5, eight Black September operatives infiltrated the Olympic Village and took eleven Israeli athletes hostage.
In a brutal sequence of events, including a botched rescue attempt by German authorities, all eleven hostages were killed.
The Munich Massacre shocked the world and placed an unprecedented level of attention on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The attack also marked a turning point in how governments and law enforcement approached counterterrorism.
The response from Israel was swift and relentless.
Following the Munich Massacre, Israeli intelligence services launched Operation Wrath of God.
This was a targeted campaign aimed at tracking down and assassinating Black September operatives responsible for the attack.
Over the course of several years, Mossad agents systematically hunted down and eliminated Black September Organization leaders across Europe and the Middle East.
Operatives were assassinated through covert methods, including letter bombs and close-range shootings, as well as in high-profile raids.
These actions were intended to serve as both retribution for the Munich attack and a deterrent against future acts of terrorism.
One of the most notable of these assassinations was the 1973 killing of Ali Hassan Salameh, known as the “Red Prince.”
Salameh was a high-ranking Black September operative believed to have planned the Munich Massacre.
After several years of pursuing Salameh, Mossad agents finally tracked him to Beirut, where he was killed in a car bomb explosion.
This operation was one of Mossad’s most complex and involved lengthy surveillance and coordination, further demonstrating the lengths Israel was willing to go to neutralize the threat of the Black September Organization.
The campaign did not end without controversy.
In one case, Mossad agents mistakenly assassinated an innocent Moroccan man in Lillehammer, Norway, after mistaking him for Salameh.
The incident, known as the Lillehammer Affair, resulted in international backlash and temporarily strained Israel’s relationships with European governments.
While Operation Wrath of God successfully neutralized key Black September Organization figures, the group’s ideology and tactics continued to influence other factions.
Black September’s actions, especially the Munich Massacre, set a precedent for highly visible, politically motivated terrorism that targeted civilians.
It’s violent legacy persisted through the tactics and structures adopted by other groups, including the PLO and, later, Hamas and Hezbollah, impacting both regional and international security measures.
Today, Black September is remembered as a significant factor in stoking the territorial, racial and religious hatred in the Middle East that has erupted once more in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
