Born in Detroit on June 21, 1968, Demetrius Flenory grew up in a working-class family. He started dealing drugs as a teenager, quickly learning the trade and building connections.
By the late 1980s, he and his brother Terry were running a small-scale cocaine operation in Detroit. Their ambition, however, knew no bounds.
During the 1990s, the Flenory brothers expanded their enterprise into one of the largest cocaine distribution networks in the United States.
Operating under the name Black Mafia Family, they controlled drug shipments from Los Angeles to Atlanta, with influence reaching major cities across the country.
At its peak, BMF was estimated to be moving hundreds of kilograms of cocaine each month and generating over $270 million in profits.
Flenory wasn’t just a drug lord; he was also a cultural icon. Recognizing the growing influence of hip-hop, he established BMF Entertainment, a music label that served as both a legitimate business front and a money-laundering operation.
The label promoted high-profile artists, most notably rapper Young Jeezy, and threw extravagant parties that became legendary in the music industry.
Big Meech’s lavish lifestyle was equally infamous. Known for his charismatic personality, he surrounded himself with luxury cars, diamond jewelry, and celebrity friends.
His infamous billboard in Atlanta boldly declaring “The World is BMF’s” symbolized his ambition and power. However, this high-profile image would ultimately contribute to his downfall.
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) began investigating BMF in the early 2000s. By 2005, they had gathered enough evidence to dismantle the operation.
Using wiretaps, informants, and financial records, law enforcement uncovered the complex network behind BMF’s drug trafficking empire.
In October 2005, Demetrius and Terry Flenory were arrested along with around 150 BMF members.
Authorities seized over $21 million in cash, luxury cars, firearms, and 2.5 kilograms of cocaine.
The indictment exposed the full scale of BMF’s operation and their role in distributing vast amounts of cocaine across the United States.
In 2007, Demetrius and Terry Flenory pleaded guilty to running a continuing criminal enterprise.
Both brothers were sentenced to 30 years in federal prison. Big Meech was incarcerated in federal prison in Oregon, while Terry served his sentence in a different facility.
Despite their downfall, BMF’s influence on hip-hop culture continued, with many artists referencing the organization’s legacy in their music.
In 2020, Terry Flenory was released on home confinement due to COVID-19 concerns, while Demetrius remains behind bars with a scheduled release in 2028.
However, his story continues to captivate audiences. In 2021, the TV series “BMF” premiered, produced by rapper 50 Cent, bringing the legend of Big Meech and the Black Mafia Family to a new generation.
