In September 1977, a young Mormon missionary was kidnapped on the steps of his church by a man using a fake handgun and chloroform. Three days later, the man escaped and reported his ordeal to the shocked and bewildered officers of the Devonshire police force, who were confused when the man claimed he had been held against his will by the former 1973 Miss Wyoming World beauty queen, and said she raped him after attempting to seduce him. Joyce McKinney, the woman who had planned the abduction would claim that she loved Kirk Anderson, who had agreed to marry her if she released him.
McKinney and her accomplice were later arrested, however he case would be something of a legal quandary, as there was no provision in law for male rape or sexual assault at the time. McKinney would later abscond and flee the United Kingdom, and eventually vanished into an increasingly desperate world of alleged prostitution, drug abuse and psychiatric problems. She would emerge several times, and came to the attention of the media, who became fascinated with the case of the manacled Mormon.
