On December 6, 1995, the bodies of Pat Tate, Tony Tucker and Craig Rolfe were found inside their Range Rover on a small farm lane in the village of Rettendon, Essex. The three men, who had been blasted to death by a shotgun wielding assailant, were prominent drug dealers.
Their deaths were seen as a result of the dangerous lifestyle in which they operated, that of drug trafficking, extreme violence and threat of murder. After his death, Pat Tate’s family gave him a lavish funeral, and attempted to remember him as a family man, who had two sons, rather than the ruthless gangster whose death generated one of the most complex murder investigations.

The Funeral Procession
Pat Tate’s funeral, held in December 1995, was a grand and extravagant affair that mirrored his flamboyant lifestyle and his status in the Essex criminal underworld. The event, which followed his murder alongside Tony Tucker and Craig Rolfe in the infamous Rettendon Range Rover murders, captured public and media attention due to its ostentatious display and the notable attendees.
A horse-drawn, glass carriage adorned with flowers carried Tate’s coffin through the streets to Pitsea Cemetery, where he was laid to rest next to Craig Rolfe. Police directed traffic, and a bell tolled solemnly during the 25-minute service at St Gabriel’s Church. Floral tributes included a heartfelt message from his son Jordan, whose card simply read:
“Thanks for the good times. I will never forget you. Your baby son Jordan.”
Around 60 mourners attended the funeral, singing All Things Bright and Beautiful and reciting the 23rd Psalm (The Lord is My Shepherd). Despite Tate’s violent and infamous life, the service included moments of deep emotional resonance, particularly in the tribute given by his brother.
Where Is Pat Tate Buried?
Pat Tate’s grave at Pitsea Cemetery reflects the extravagance of his funeral. His headstone, marked with his photograph, bears an elaborate inscription:
“Treasured memories of Pat Terence Tate, who departed this life on December 6, 1995, aged 37. Loving father, loyal friend, and brother. Missing your smiles and generous heart. Your presence will never leave us. Now you walk with the angels, looking down from God’s great kingdom. Until we meet again, God Bless. We will never forget you.”
The base of the headstone is adorned with two white doves, symbolizing peace, while the back carries a poetic message:
“God found the path was growing rough, the hill too steep to climb. So he closed your eyelids and whispered, ‘Peace be thine.’”
Tate’s grave now sits beside Craig Rolfe’s, whose headstone is more understated but equally heartfelt. Rolfe’s reads:
“In loving memory of a dear son, brother, and father, Craig Anthony Rolfe, who was taken from us December 6, 1993, aged 26. His life a beautiful memory. His absence a silent grief.”
Funeral Context and Connections
Tate’s funeral occurred just one day after Rolfe’s and was closely followed by Tony Tucker’s funeral. Although inseparable in life, Tate and Tucker were buried apart—Tate in Pitsea Cemetery and Tucker in Upminster. Tucker’s burial, like Tate’s, was marked by grandeur, with more than 100 mourners in attendance. His grave features boxing gloves, symbolizing his association with boxer Nigel Benn, and a photograph of him laughing.
A Lasting Legacy
Today, Pat Tate’s grave remains a poignant reminder of the excesses and violence of his life. The funeral and headstone, though lavish, contrast with the peace and serenity of Pitsea Cemetery. Tate’s life and death continue to fascinate those who follow the story of the Essex Boys, marking his place in the annals of British true crime.
