This deal allowed Bulger to operate with near impunity for decades. He used his FBI connections to eliminate enemies, often tipping off the agency about rival gang activities.
The extent of the FBI’s involvement in shielding him remained hidden until the 1990s when the corruption was exposed, leading to a massive scandal.
In 1994, with authorities closing in, Bulger received a tip from Connolly and fled Boston. For the next 16 years, he successfully evaded capture, traveling across the United States and even living in Europe.
He and his longtime girlfriend, Catherine Greig, ultimately settled in Santa Monica, California, where they lived a quiet life under assumed identities.
Bulger’s time as a fugitive ended in June 2011 when authorities, acting on a tip, arrested him in his apartment.
The 81-year-old was found with weapons and over $800,000 in cash hidden in the walls. His arrest brought an end to one of the longest manhunts in FBI history.
In 2013, Bulger faced trial in Boston for a series of crimes, including 19 murders. The trial exposed his violent past, detailing gruesome killings and his manipulation of law enforcement.
He was convicted on multiple charges, including racketeering and murder, and sentenced to two consecutive life terms plus five years.
Bulger was transferred to several federal prisons before being sent to the Hazelton penitentiary in West Virginia in 2018.
Within hours of his arrival, he was brutally beaten to death by fellow inmates. The murder of the 89-year-old former crime boss was widely seen as an act of prison justice.
